Avril Lavigne: "Girlfriend"
(2007)
By David Greenwald | 31 January 2008
The annals of pop music will not remember “Girlfriend” as a modern classic. But when we look back at 2007 in a year from now, it’ll be seen as a song for our time: a time when vicious, spiteful California blondes dominate our reality TV and when a former pop star shaving her head and attacking a car with an umbrella can steal news headlines from the death of a former Playboy model. “Girlfriend” is harmless, predictable stuff -- “Hey Mickey” cheerleading, pop-punk riffing and sneering post-Alanis vocals -- until Lavigne, famous for songs about sk8er boi's, drops the f-bomb to describe herself as “the motherfucking princess.” Welcome to America, ladies and gentlemen.
