Curren$y f/ Trademark Da Skydiver & Young Roddy: "Roasted"

Single (2010)

By Elana Max Dahlager | 13 September 2010

I think this song might be the most laid back thing I have ever heard in my entire life. If I had any sort of authority in the world, this is what “chillwave” would mean. Screw Washed Out. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: Curren$y is the best. He likes kung fu movies and getting high and playing video games. Spitta, if you’re reading this (somehow), I think this could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Mostly, I just love Curren$y’s voice. He’s got an effortless drawl that has a really warm quality to it. And lyrically, as ever, he is just so good at rapping about smoking weed that it doesn’t really bother me that he’s just saying the same shit over and over. And he really likes fresh squeezed lemonade, which is a sentiment I can definitely get behind. Minutemaid is the devil.

Obviously, Curren$y and his collaborators inhabit a very similar stylistic space. I think Trademark’s verse has a few awkward rhymes, and Young Roddy definitely sounds, well, young, but the song just flows so nicely. The beat is super mellow: it’s smooth, but not slick. It’s very reminiscent of ’90s R&B, but also trip hop and maybe even a little bit of bossa nova. Somehow, that doesn’t feel cheesy, even though it probably should. The song is simple and clean and easy to listen to. It’s unassuming and unpretentious, which is refreshing in an overworked, overwrought, Autotuned world.
