Daily Stupidity Of A Superhero: "More Power More Pop More Love"

(2009)

By George Bass | 27 January 2009

We’re all in the shit-cart; no doubt about it. Currencies flounder, the weather’s fucked up and jobs disappear like granules of egg-timer sand. As Patrick Bateman’s disembodied head says in American Psycho: “These are terrible times.” But hey! Rough with the smooth, rough with the smooth. We’ve still got our health, our thumbs and electricity, so if you’re feeling closed in by strains of Kryptonite and fancy amping your way back out again, here’s what you need to bang down the lid on what’s been officially the bleakest week of the year (sorry Barack). Game Boy anarchists CalmDownKidder have put together another free compilation for us all, this time determined that nothing but the most dazzling and grin-provoking shit be included.

As expected, its mix of ’80s console chips and brightly bursting pixels is more fucked up than Doctor Snuggles but it’s also five times as fun, with this particular favourite sticking in my head like a forgotten surgeon’s forceps. Daily Stupidity Of A Superhero hail from Indonesia, and as they breezily proclaim on their MySpace, “We just happy little frens who want to make blep blop tunes.” They do so with a Cookie Monster smile, and “More Power More Pop More Love” is a lovely what-if for the fun we’d all have if we only had capes for a day. 8-bit fireworks take off one by one until hopeful beats start fizzing, carrying us higher with them just like a lovestruck Margot Kidder in Superman. They say when the films dried up they found her nude and toothless in a hedge, but fuck it. Who else can say they once skirted the heavens without getting shot down by the Missile Defense Agency? And then went on to successfully live in a hedge.
