Ducktails: "Art Vandelay"
(2010)
By Elana Max Dahlager | 14 September 2010
So, here’s the thing: this song is kind of boring. It’s very “on trend,” I guess. I mean, it’s fuzzy (sidebar: I used to be really into songs with heavy distortion. Now I only listen to Queen. It’s the rebel in me). It’s definitely filled to the brim with sugar and fake-nostalgia. On the other hand, I guess I am a sucker for a good Seinfeld reference. And Matt Mondanile is really, really hot.
And I know that people are all, “oh no, this is such a departure from the Ducktails I know and love” or whatever, but: you know what it’s not a departure from? Real Estate. And you know who kind of sucks anyway? Ducktails. Seriously. If his face wasn’t so pretty, his live act would be the failing-est fail that ever failed. (When I saw him live, he heard me talking smack about his opening act. He was standing right behind me. So basically I’m famous).
Anyway, the song has a very wistful, end-of-summer feel to it. Compared to the Ducktails of yesteryear (like actually last year; this guy hasn’t been around for that long), this song is super stripped down. It feels very acoustic and, dare I say, folksy. I actually really like the addition of vocals to his usual “instrumental” stuff (or electronic or whatever. Someone smarter than me can classify it better, I’m sure). My mom might even like this song. It’s cute and easy to listen to. And, you know, Matt Mondanile. So hot.
