Grandaddy: "Jeez Louise"

(2006)

By David Greenwald | 28 January 2008

With their last album criticized for being too staid and slow-paced, Grandaddy turn up the volume with “Jeez Louise.” The guitars and keyboards enter with incendiary force, and the song barely lets up over the course of its 3:41 runtime until an idiosyncratic acoustic outro. Surprisingly, singer Jason Lyte throws many of the band’s sci-fi quirks out the window in the seemingly autobiographical lyrics: “Thrown away for our teenage dreams / shacked up in Modesto Inn / all of a sudden your mom crashed in / she said, ‘no he’s not the one for you’ / yeah your mom, she always hated me.” Lyte is getting personal before it’s too late -- after the release of Just Like The Fambly Cat in May, the long-running Grandaddy is breaking up. If this song is any indication, at least the band is going out with one last hurrah.
