Margot and the Nuclear So-and-So's: "Vampires In Blue Dresses"

(2005)

By David Greenwald | 11 January 2008

This is a fun record. But not “fun” in the metallic, synthetic way that Annie purports to be, or with the too-cute silliness of Architecture In Helsinki. Margot And The Nuclear So-And-So’s are a smart band with a wry sense of humor that comes across in their lushly produced music, which touches on folk and indie-pop with equal sincerity. “Vampires In Blue Dresses” is one of the album’s more upbeat songs, starting with a romantic sentiment (“Somebody’s gonna love you”) that turns into a tell-off. “Life is full of your regrets / and I should be one,” Richard Edwards sings, though he sounds pretty happy about the whole thing. A song that actually manages to be fun (and not depressing or gorgeous or visceral or whatever) based on good songwriting, a solid performance, and a little whimsy is rare, so treasure this one.
