Musiq Soulchild: "B.U.D.D.Y."
(2007)
By Chet Betz | 31 January 2008
Here Musiq Soulchild attempts to woo a stranger into being his fuck buddy. It’s an ode to non-commitments, a titular acronym without words, and a musical misspelling. As in, music shouldn’t be spelled with a “q,” just like this song shouldn’t even exist. And yet it does, and since it’s here already, let’s let the absurdity amuse. Like Mr. Soulchild’s fake name, the kitsch-factor is built in. “C’mon, give it a try,” Musiq pleads with stranger as bright neo-soul plows away behind him, as Musiq sounds like he’s about to get down on one knee. Dude really wants that lay. Maybe sometimes he’ll take girl out to dinner or something, but he really just needs a “b-u-d-d-y,” where “b” stands for “boinking” and the rest stands for “with no strings attached.” The comedy inherent to the track’s pairing of hedonistic desperation with silky smooth romancing is only accentuated by Musiq’s fat head belting dulcet tones. “B.U.D.D.Y.” being the logical progression from his song “Just Friends,” how will Musiq follow up? “Casual Acquaintance That I’d Like to Rape”?
