Slim Thug: "Thug Show"
(2010)
By Colin McGowan | 7 September 2011
It’s true that the rap blogosphere is a hype farm, but there are so many outlets desperate to push two rappers a week as The Next Jeezy that they possess little credibility. The word “mind-blowing” can only be used so many times before it looses itself from its denotation, and Starlito is merely pretty good. More morbidly fascinating is that rap blogs operate as thrift shops, of sorts, where genre nerds peruse racks of old rappers no one loves enough to claim ownership of anymore. Young Buck put out a video this week in which he looks completely worn out, yapping perfunctorily about bandanas and robberies in a way that makes it seem like he might have to actually start robbing people if he doesn’t revive his career in the next eight months.
In that vein: hey, it’s Slim Thug! I knew The Guy Who Released “I Ain’t Heard of That,” Which, Ironically, Is Now Someone’s Response To The Question “Have You Heard the New Slim Thug Single?” was releasing music, but I imagine I’m not alone in having no idea he put out a full-blown album in November of last year, from which he’s apparently still releasing singles. He’s like a lost acquaintance intentionally calling your number, then beginning the conversation with “Sorry, I was trying to dial my friend Scott. But it just so happens that it’s my birthday tomorrow…”
Regardless, The Guy Who Released An Album Titled Already Platinum That, Six Years After Its Release, Has Still Not Gone Platinum, sounds roughly similar, albeit his flow has slowed noticeably; he sounds even more like Bun B than he did upon his arrival to the mainstream in 2005. This isn’t a bad thing, inherently speaking, until you realize he’s also adopted Bun’s boring post-Pimp C vernacular, describing himself, over forgettable southern creep, as “cooler than a fan is.” Good to see he’s sticking to the Hype Williams-style letterbox in his video, though.
As I close my Google Reader tab, I bid you adieu, Thugga. I’m actually one of the less-than-a-million people who bought Already Platinum; it’s been nice catching up. I hope to find out what Young Joc’s been doing for the past half decade sometime later this week.
