The "Yes, I'm a Pop Album" Award for Most Frontloaded Record

By Chet Betz | 16 December 2008

Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams
(Geffen; 2008)

I mean, seriously. Once album highlight and first single “I Decided” ends, it’s best you just stop listening. Here’s the tally: “God Given Name” = nice intro; “T.O.N.Y.” = decent second track that still needs a remix with Ghostface; “Dancing in the Dark” = cliched but ultimately palatable; “Would’ve Been the One” = amazing; “Sandcastle Disco” = so much fun; “I Decided” = Song of the Year. Rest of album = deleted from hard drive.

Though not really a pop record, another runner-up for this award was Grouper’s Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, which opens with three lo-fi swoons of beauty and then promptly falls asleep.
