Sun Glitters: "It Takes Me (MMOTHS Remix)"
(2012)
By George Bass | 12 March 2012
After wooing bloggers last year with his Burial knock-off Everything Could Be Fine, Victor Ferreira is back with an EP of more of the same. The Sun Glitters formula is a simple one—take block drums, crackle, synths, and pitch-shifted vocals, and ship them from south London to the Pacific—and it’s caught the attention of Jack Colleran, otherwise known as Moths (and now MMOTHS). On the eve of his own EP he’s given Ferreira a congratulatory remix, using the Luxembourger as a test bed before he goes off to share stage with Interpol.
And if this is the test, then Interpol fans beware: MMOTHS have interfered with “It Takes Me” at a molecular level. Those pitch-shifted vocals are now a bat colony on E, the hypersonic chatter lasting for the song’s full four minutes. Keyboards get scraped, drums pop like indoor fireworks, and Ferreira’s signature is so transformed it’s like he’s been remixed by Carlos the Jackal. But somehow, it’s still obvious this is Sun Glitters—Colleran hangs on to the Bermuda vibes Ferreira loves, and turns “It Takes Me” into something independently dazzling, glimpsed through layers of chemicals. It’s not the best entry point for either artist, but it is possibly the most accurate aural imagining of crossing beautiful countryside while carsick.
