Welcome! Hit pause on your NICAM Terminator 2 VHS and put down that tape of In Utero: the 8bitcollective’s Misfit Chris has unearthed his Casio CA-100, rebooting a module of…yeah, you get it. Rolling us back to age of of Tab Clear and groundbreaking MJ allegations, “Welcome To 1993” is what one might call a feather-ruffler—it’s already been denounced as heresy by the hardcore at 8BC, guilty of violating their beloved “Strictly Chip” ethic. If only they’d realize that, yes, even sixteen years ago, there were other noises around besides the screams from their Sega Game Gears and rock score from Mortal Kombat, they might just find something they could dance to. Until then, they’ll be skimping out on this lovely slice of warm grime with bootleg Art of Noise bits—just right for this season’s alt. hook to bust through the summer mugginess.
And here’s the icing: it does actually feature aforesaid Sega Game Gear screams! That’s correct; you can count them at the two-minute halfway mark, bouncing like baby germs besides the keyboards and Dawn of the Dead quotes. Therefore, it can be argued that this = 8-bit by association. The Misfit is simply eager to stress that the Year of The Rooster was a lively one, and he’s out to stack as many buzzes from the era as he can into his four-minute pitch. It’s 1993, the economy’s up and Steven Spielberg’s just brought back the dinosaurs. I’m sorry if you’re upset at the lack of orchestral cartridge consoles; try Weezer Goes Game Boy instead.
