I dedicated my last podcast to Nova Scotian cat Shady—the news-maker who climbed a tree, pissed off a bunch of people, smiled for some photos, and then defiantly ran off. Well, how’s this for a terrifying coincidence: now there’s a “Hungry hawk on the loose around Halifax.” But Shady’s got nothing to worry about, righ…

AHHHH!
Cree the angry hawk (but not the angry hawk pictured above), from my current hometown of Bedford, pulled a Houdini and escaped from his cage early this week. And though he and Shady clearly have a lot in common, and in another context could probably be schemer buddies, Cree’s owner (a “well-known falconer”) warns: “[he’s] gonna be hungry because it’s not being fed … [he] could swoop down and easily take a small dog or cat.” Well, fuck.
Naturally, then, I take back my urge for Shady to find another tree to be cool in—I don’t want to make it any easier for this asshole bird to snatch him up. So, with thanks to all artists and labels involved, I give him instead podcast #70: music for digging a hole or something to wait this shit out in. At least until Cree tires of free-range pets and starts dive-bombing people instead.
When that happens, fellow Haligonians, there’s only one way to know if it really is Cree wrecking your shit: “[the owner] said people should keep an eye out for … leather straps on its feet. One strap has a small bell on it.” You got it, well-known falconer—I’ll be sure to check for footwear and listen for a tiny bell when my next walk to work turns Hitchcockian.
