Happy new year, all. And what better way to kick it off than with a belated resolution for this, the first CMG mix of 2011: take these podcast intros more seriously. Previously I would ignore the music altogether and, instead, spend a few hundred words on some frivolous news report, like this awesome month-old story from my home province of Newfoundland—where, during a week-long standoff, police flooded out a man’s house waiting for him to soggily surrender, except that he had long since managed to walk away unnoticed and hitchhike 20km to buy cigarettes. This really happened.
But no more. This mix is dedicated to a more serious, dare I say regal, 2011. A year in which podcast intros will no longer be concerned with the slapstick, minute details of ridiculous stories. Like, say, how the police, well after they realized their suspect wasn’t actually in the house—thereby admitting they hadn’t exactly “surrounded” the place, lest it includes an elusive, secret fifth wall—had to make a second public announcement correcting their earlier claim that they’d, uh, captured him with the flooding, and not the truth: that they’d received a call about the dude’s whereabouts 16 hours after he walked away from a standoff without anyone noticing.
