XXXIX

By Dom Sinacola | 21 March 2008

I hate Chicago in the winter. Which means for six years I’ve slowly devolved into a seething purveyor of malice, consoled only by the free waterproof hiking boots I got from my friend Karl who used to work at a high-end sporting goods store, who used to attend product rep meetings for the free products, industry swag like intimidatingly treaded, lightweight snow boots that could take his roommate up a mountain. But I’ll never climb a mountain. I’ll never be able to leave Chicago. If only the weather were the biting end of it; instead, the whole city seems to be confused by the cold and the snow, unable to drive, communicate, function. It drives me absolutely bonkers until I’m so brimming with hate that I wake up every morning, scowl at my sweat-soaked comforter and ask, whispering, “What kind of filthy beast am I?” My window is covered in frost—on the inside.

As a remedy I made this playlist of wistful, earthy-brown stuff. Sometimes it burns and sometimes it simmers, but mostly it attempts to banish all the cold and hate away. Northward maybe. Go find some baby seals to clobber, hate.

So a walloping, warm thanks to all the labels and artists prompt, even enthusiastic, in their participation even when they offered further help but I never responded because that’s the kind of person Chicago’s winter makes me: I’m heartless to those most accommodating and generally unwilling to be anything other than smug and delusional. Enjoy.
